Made at a cost of Rs. 14.5 crore (production plus promotions), Ishaqzaade collected R15 crore from selling its satellite rights itself. Which means that the film, which collected a box office total of Rs. 15.91 crore on its opening weekend, has done very well.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh says, “The film fared exceptionally well. It showed a healthy growth over the weekend by collecting an estimated Rs. 4.54 cr (Friday), Rs. 5.15 cr (Saturday), Rs. 6.22cr (Sunday) at the box office.” Box Office India editor Vajir Singh adds, “For Ishaqzaade, the fresh pairing, intense story and the banner’s brand name worked. That it was National Award winner Habib Faisal’s second outing was a plus.”

Habib Faisal however claims he doesn’t understand figures. He says, “I am told it’s doing better in smaller cities and single screens as compared to multiplexes. For a film with a new star cast and a hard hitting subject, that’s incentive enough.”

However according to Taran, the other weekend release, Dangerous Ishq (DI), Karisma Kapoor’s film based on past life regression, was a “disaster”. Taran adds, “Though the concept was interesting, the film’s promos failed to create buzz. Once the film released, its weak screenplay didn’t add to the word of mouth either. DI collected R3.35 crore.”

The film was made on a budget of R17 crore, confirms director Vikram Bhatt. He says, “I don’t know the figures spent on promotions. We are in talks for the sale of its satellite rights.”

Vajir adds “Vikram has made a niche for himself in the horror genre. His own success worked against him. The film’s debacle won’t affect Karisma’s career as she is not competing these days.”

Figure this

* Vicky Donor collected R2.25 crore in its fourth weekend, taking the total to Rs. 34.25 crore. *Jannat2 collected Rs. 4.75 crore in second weekend, taking the 10 day total to Rs. 40.3 crore.
