Hot on the success of her dark role in Race, Bengal bombshell Bipasha Basu will once again do something similar… this time for Sanjay Gupta’s Pankh directed by Sudipto Chattopadhyay.
Talking about it Sudipto says, “Bipasha plays a woman who is constantly trying to provoke the 20-year-old Jerry (the protagonist) played by Maradona Rebello. Bipasha agreed to do the role after just a one-line narration. She’s Jerry’s alter-ego and fantasy who only exists in his mind. He always imagines her to be a diva. Actually she’s an actress but we don’t show her except in a poster.”
Sudipto continues, “In the song Jiya Jala Na, she seduces him. She creates the confusion in his mind about his real identity — whether he’s a boy or girl, a man or eunuch because he used to be a famous child artiste cross-dressed by his mother as a girl. He continues, “Bipasha completely undoes Jerry which leads to the final catastrophe. She pushes him to fly and that’s why the film is called Wings or Pankh. He flies away from the reality of sordid existence.” Bips has a different look in every scene. There’s no consistent look for her. There’s a constant disturbance in Jerry’s mind. His only relief is when he sexually fantasises about Bips. He wants to make love to her.”
About Bipasha’s diva look in the song, he says, “But the idea was executed by Rocky S and Gavin Miguel. It’s a very seductive song sung by Sunidhi Chauhan. I wanted her to look like two divas — Sophia Loren and Liza Minelli from Cabaret. Bipasha even cut her hair for the song, she didn’t want to wear a wig as it doesn’t fit proportionately. We had lengthy discussions and spoke about each scene. She understood the character and gave it a face. While enacting any scene with the other actors present Bipasha never made herself visible except for Jerry. She never ever looked at anybody else but behaved as if she was invisible. She did a brilliant job.”
